About the Artist
Savannah Saturn is a full-time artist from Scotrun, Pennsylvania, and is known for creating “trippy drawings” which is a more psychedelic style. She started to get more into drawing when she was a freshman in high school by doodling in class from when she wasn’t paying attention. Now, she draws all the time and on everything like on canvases, paper, tables, walls, trash cans, etc. She doesn’t have one specific media she uses to create her pieces because she uses multiple and is learning to do more. She tends to stick mainly around acrylic paint, ink, and spray paint, separately or as a mixed-media piece. A lot of her pieces relate to what she is passionate about and what she likes such as space, aliens, dinosaurs, astronauts, and nature. What inspires her the most to draw is nature and natural things because of the beauty of it all. She sells almost all of her paintings and drawings on Etsy and also makes merchandise. She is also very active on lots of social media such as Youtube, Instagram, and Tik Tok to show off her artwork, which has led to her growing a bigger following.
Formal Analysis
This piece is called “Give Me Space” and it’s of an astronaut, outer space, and “space” as in distance. It is a mixed-media piece containing ink and acrylic paint from paint pens. This piece is big enough to see and hold so you don’t need to go up close to look at all the details. There are a lot of undulating and sinuous lines as well as it being a staccato since it’s one piece that has a background with a different type of style. The astronaut is in pen and ink with black and white colors while outer space and the “space” is full of black, white, and vivid pastel colors such as blue, pink, yellow, and purple.
Content Analysis
The meaning of this piece is that the space is good for a lot of reasons such as friendships, relationships, family, ex’s, etc. The vivid colors in space represent the other form of space that is needed for everyone. Sometimes it is good to separate and get time apart to have clarity on whether it’s to realize what you are missing or if you are better off without them in your life. As I said earlier, a lot of her inspiration comes from natural things and what she is passionate about, so she advocates for people and art to “stay weird,” which is an element she has integrated into her artwork. The vivid colors in space represent the other form of space that is needed for everyone.
Synthesis
I interpreted the artwork the same way as she explained it by saying it’s about everyone wanting space in life to be able to know what you want or don’t want in your life. I feel that the “space” being in vivid colors shows how having that space can have a positive impact on someone’s life. Also, by the astronaut being in black and white, it represents how all that space you’re not getting is turning into negativity and is trying to break down that barrier to be able to achieve that positively. Saturn’s artwork inspires me because it’s how I wish to draw. Also, I like space and psychedelic work, so that’s why I agree and resonate with a lot of her ideas and perceptions.
